In Java the following is a syntactically correct statement: System.out.println("Hello World"); while the following is not: System.out.println(Hello World); The second example would theoretically print the variable Hello World instead of the Some common complaints about usage strike me as too persnickety, but I’m just discussing mistakes in English that happen to bother me. One famous example of a syntactically correct, but ultimately meaningless sentence is Noam Chomsky's "Colourless green idea sleep furiously". I could take the easy way out and say I was a professor of English and did this sort of thing for a living. I'm pretty sure this is how a "normal" sentence would sound/look like.
When an author tends to use complex or compound sentences and then throws in a shorter sentence it is intended to get the reader's attention.
